Rug Cleaning in Granada Hills, CA

Why Valley rugs wear out from the inside

The cause is grit. Decomposed-granite dust and street soil ride in on feet, then sift down through the pile to the foundation. Every step grinds it sideways against the yarn. Wool takes this the longest; viscose takes it the worst. By the time a traffic lane looks gray, fiber is already cut. Washing removes the abrasive. It does not grow back pile that is gone.

Hand-knotted wool and silk pieces get handled off-site, not extracted in place. They are dusted dry first, on the back, before any water. Then washed flat and rinsed. Dried under air movement afterward. In-home wands cannot flush a rug's foundation, and soaking a rug on hardwood or travertine traps moisture under it.

Pet urine is the honest problem. It passes through the backing and sits in the cotton or jute foundation. Heat rises and salts reactivate. The odor returns. Surface cleaning hides it for a week.

Check your own rug first. Flip a corner. Knots on the back mean hand-knotted. A glued, waffled backing means machine-made. If that type has delaminated and the edges ripple, say so up front; washing will not fix the structure, and we will tell you when it is not worth doing.
