Carpet Cleaning FAQ — Granada Hills, CA
Common questions from homeowners in Granada Hills and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How long before I can walk on the carpet again?
Most Granada Hills jobs are dry to the touch in four to six hours. The low humidity here works in your favor, and in a hot dry summer stretch over 95F we have seen rooms ready in closer to three. You can walk on damp carpet in clean socks right away if you need to get through the house. Wait until it is fully dry before you put heavy furniture back on the pile or let the dog loose in that room.

Walk me through what actually happens when your tech shows up.
First we look at the carpet with you, check the fiber and backing, and point out anything that may not come all the way out. Then we dry vacuum, because pulling the hillside grit out before water hits it matters more than anything else we do that day. Spots get pretreated and given time to break down, then we run hot water extraction section by section, and we groom the pile so it dries standing up. Last step is a walk-through with you while the carpet is still damp so nothing gets missed.

Hot-water extraction, shampooing, dry compound. which one are you using on my floors?
Hot water extraction is what we run on most homes. It injects heated solution into the pile and vacuums it back out with the soil, and it is the method Shaw, Mohawk and Stainmaster name in their own care instructions. Shampooing agitates a foam into the fiber and is mostly reserved for heavily matted commercial-grade loop carpet. Dry compound cleaning uses an absorbent granule with almost no moisture, which is useful on wool and on a few Karastan and Masland constructions where we do not want to soak the backing.

How often does carpet in this area need cleaning?
Every twelve months is the baseline, and most Granada Hills households land closer to every six to nine. The reason is local. Decomposed-granite grit off the hillsides below the Santa Susana Mountains and Oat Mountain stays airborne in dry air and settles deep into the pile, and Santa Ana wind events in fall push dust, ash and smoke-film indoors on top of that. Add a dog and a back patio door that opens forty times a day, and you are grinding abrasive sand into the fiber base every time someone walks the hallway.

What makes one carpet cleaning job cost more than another?
Square footage of carpet we actually clean is the starting point, not the square footage of the house. After that, the things that move the number on this job are pet urine volume and how far it went into the pad, whether traffic lanes need a separate pretreat and agitation pass, stairs, and whether we are dealing with a 1970s two-story up north of Rinaldi where the tech is hauling hose up a flight. Wool and the softer Anderson Tuftex and Masland goods take a slower, gentler process than a basic nylon Berber, and that time shows up in the number too. We look at the rooms, tell you what we would do, and you get the figure before anyone unrolls a hose.

Who shifts the couches and beds out of the way?
We do, for the normal things. Sofas, chairs, coffee tables, dining sets and light dressers get moved, cleaned under, and set back on blocks or tabs until the pile dries. We leave beds, pianos, china cabinets with contents, wall units and electronics where they sit and clean right up to them. If you want a bed moved, empty it and clear the nightstands before we arrive and the tech will handle it.

What comes out and what is staying in my carpet?
Soil, grit, grease, food and drink spills, most pet accidents and general traffic-lane darkening come out. Bleach, benzoyl peroxide from acne cream, some plant fertilizers and strong dyes have removed the color from the fiber, so there is nothing left to lift and the fix is a patch or a dye job. Old urine that soaked into the pad and the slab underneath may need a subsurface treatment, and on slab-on-grade houses with no basement under them we sometimes have to pull carpet back to treat the pad directly. Permanent texture damage from furniture crush or filtration lines along baseboards will improve but will not vanish.

Is any of this a problem for the dog or the kids?
No. We use detergents rated safe for residential use around pets and children, and the extraction step pulls the solution back out instead of leaving it sitting in the pile. Most of the cleaning power comes from heat, water pressure and vacuum, not from heavy chemistry. We do keep pets and small kids out of the room until it is dry, mainly so nobody tracks damp carpet across the rest of the house. If anyone has a specific sensitivity, say so when you book and we will adjust the products.

Besides wall-to-wall carpet, what else will you clean while you are here?
Sofas, sectionals, recliners and dining chairs, yes. Area rugs we clean in place when the construction allows, and wool or silk rugs we take for off-site washing because they need a controlled dry. Tile and grout we handle with a pressurized spinner tool, which is common work in these postwar tract homes where the entry and kitchen are tile and everything else is carpet. Bundling them into one visit saves a trip charge and gets the whole floor plan done on the same afternoon.

Any chance you can get here today, and how far out do you travel?
Same-day slots open up most weekdays, and morning calls have the best odds. We cover Granada Hills and the surrounding northern San Fernando Valley, this northwest corner of the City of Los Angeles, including the late 1940s through 1960s ranch and split-level tracts and the 1970s and 80s hillside two-stories north of Rinaldi. Call and tell us how many rooms, whether there are stairs, and whether pets are part of the picture, and we will tell you straight what we can do today. If today is full we will usually have something the next morning.
