Why does the carpet look dirty again a week later?

Usually it was shampooed, not rinsed. Rotary shampoo whips detergent into foam. Foam lifts soil. But residue stays in the yarn. Sticky residue grabs dust fast. Granada Hills dust is decomposed granite, tracked from yards and hillside streets. It is abrasive and gray. That is what makes traffic lanes. So we shampoo only where it earns its keep, then hot-water extract the detergent back out.

Cut-pile nylon in postwar tract bedrooms takes shampooing well. Berber and low-pile loop from the 1980s and 1990s does not. Loop wicks. Residue parks in the base of the loop and browns. Light polyester plush in upgraded Valley homes holds red wine and coffee differently than nylon does. Polyester resists water stains but loves oil. Dog dander and body oil in sleeping spots is the harder problem there.

Shampooing does nothing for urine through the pad into slab. Nothing. The salts sit under the carpet and re-odorize when heat or humidity climbs. That needs pad work and a subfloor treatment, not surface foam. Same with filtration lines at baseboards.

Wool and hand-knotted rugs never get shampooed in place. Those go off-site for off-floor washing. Inland drying with air movers runs a few hours.
